McDaniel-Tichenor House Scholarship 2024

The McDaniel-Tichenor House Board of Directors is pleased to engage the community and support local students in their educational endeavors by offering a scholarship award. Built in 1887 by Governor Henry McDaniel, the house is a key piece of Monroe’s legacy and the stewards of the house seek to preserve, protect, and promote the majesty of the house and its history. Through Governor McDaniel and his heirs, the house has important historic ties to key higher education institutions including: Georgia Institute of Technology, the University of Georgia, Davidson College, and Mercer University. Governor McDaniel was an 1856 graduate of Mercer University where his father, Ira Oliver McDaniel, was a professor. During his term as governor, he established the Georgia Institute of Technology (1885) and he served on the University of Georgia Board of Trustees for 38- years (24 years as President). Emily Tichenor, the Governor’s granddaughter-in-law and the last heir to live in the house, served on the Board of Visitors at Davidson College for many years and was a loyal supporter and legacy donor. Through the essays required as a part of this application, the Board hopes to gain insight into how to engage future generations with the house and make it relevant and connected to the thriving Monroe community.
