The Property

Seven acres of manicured lawns and woods invites visitors to stroll the historic grounds of the Governors' mansion in Monroe. Built in 1887 for Governor Henry McDaniel and his family, this historic property contains grasses and plantings that emphasize shape, patterns, and texture.

The original estate that Governor McDaniel Purchased in the 1880’s included fifteen acres of land. Toward the rear of the property is a small cottage that may date to the late 19th or early 20th century. On the western edge of the property is a garage built in the 1930’s. In 1966, the old barn was torn; it was behind the garage. In 1970, Emily Tichenor had it converted into an apartment and she had the carport built. There are seven acres of the property presently with 2 rental houses known as The Carriage House(Woodland Rd) and Glaefke Cottage.

Both rental houses are managed by Summit Management Company. The Glaefke Cottage was given to Brook Glaefke, Emily and Henry’s nephew. He later added on to the Cottage and is now owned by McDaniel-Tichenor House, Inc.
